Welcome to Japanese Knotweed Solutions Ireland

Japanese Knotweed is an alien invasive perennial species that has become increasingly problematic in Ireland.

It was introduced in England as an ornamental plant also used as fodder across the UK and has spread across from England in to Ireland. The plant grows mainly along watercourses transport routes and brown field sites.

Japanese Knotweed has vigorously invaded natural habitats in Ireland and has ousted native plants creating monoculture stands that grow to the preclusion of all other species. Native plants cannot cope with this invasive alien and local plant biodiversity is reduced.

Japanese Knotweed can also seriously damage buildings, hard surfaces and infrastructure causing thousands of pounds worth of damage to roads, paving and building foundations.

The ‘Global Invasive Species Programme’, categorises Japanese Knotweed as one of the 100 worst invasive alien species. In light of the economic and environmental damage associated with this species, the risk assessment process undertaken as part of the ‘Invasive Species in Ireland Project’ identified Japanese Knotweed as one of the highest risk non native species in Ireland.
